Hands on Seminars

.....where handlers learn to train.

Young retrievers with the "Right Start Advantage" go on to become competitive adults. Learn the steps Jim Van Engen has used to prepare over sixty-seven dogs to acheive FC titles at these five-day, hands-on seminars.

Each year Right Start Kennel hosts a hands-on training seminar designed to provide participants with a fundamental understanding of the principles involved in starting and training the young retriever. Each phase of Jim's program is covered, including: Basic Obedience, Pre-yard Work, Yard Work and Transition Training.

Along the way principles of the training exercises are discussed, applicable drills are taught and demonstrated, and each handler then has the opportunity to practice. This also provides a great opportunity for handlers to gain some insight into how to deal with specific problems, how to avoid training roadblocks in the future and understand and appreciate the importance of following a progressive, step-by-step training program. While training is the major focus of each seminar, a significant amount of time is devoted to teaching handlers such that at the end of the seminar all participants become better trainers as-well-as better handlers.

Enrollment in RSK seminars is limited to provide the handlers with individual attention and to ensure that dogs at several levels of training are represented for the benefit of the entire group. Since the principles taught are based on a progressive program, participating dogs at different levels of training provides for teaching all levels of the RSK program.
